Note: Aviation laptop users should not follow these instruction as their laptops are specially setup by the Aviation department.

If the network card is of a newer model, Windows Vista should automatically detect it and install the proper drivers, possible prompting for the driver disk included with the network card. If the network card is not automatically detected by Windows Vista, then the setup procedure provided in the network card's documentation must be follows.

Once the network card is properly installed, click on start->control panel.

Click on “Network and Internet” or if you’re in classic view click on “Network and Sharing Center”.

click on “Network and Sharing Center”.

Click on “Manage Network Connections”.

From here, you’ll see an icon labeled Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection, depending on whether you’re using a cable connection or wireless respectively. Right click on this icon and select properties.

This new screen allows you to configure the protocols and clients your computer will use to "talk" on the network.

The only clients and protocols needed to get on the UND network and access the Internet is TCP/IP. However, you may choose to install Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer sharing if you wish to view other computers on the network via the My Network Places icon found on your desktop or Start menu.

If you find you are missing TCP/IP or any other client or protocol you wish to utilize, simply click on the install button located on this screen, and choose the appropriate client or protocol you wish to use from the list Windows presents you with.

UND uses DHCP for their IP addressing. An IP address is used by your computer in order to get online. An IP address is like a street address for your computer, only this is the address used on the Internet. Because UND uses DHCP for assigning IP addresses, configuring your TCP/IP protocol for the UND network is extremely easy.

To configure your TCP/IP protocol for the UND network, select “Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPV4) and click “Properties”.

Set IP address, and DNS to Obtain automatically.

Once you have made all these changes, close all the windows by hitting "OK" at the bottom of each of them, saving all the changes. You may need to reboot your computer before these changes will take effect.
