Attention: Residence Hall Students
Residence Services and Information Technology
Systems and Services (ITSS) have recommended the
purchase of a firewall to be used to protect
residence hall computers. The Interim CIO, James
Shaeffer, has approved the firewall and made
funding available.
The firewall is what is known as a "stateful"
network device, meaning it will only allow
connections from the Internet if they have been
initiated within the residence hall network.
This will prevent systems such as web servers,
FTP servers, email servers, etc from being seen
outside of the residence halls. If you have a
need to provide such a service beyond the
residence halls, you may make a request to
ResNet at 777-3424.
Your access to information and services on the
Internet will not change, however your ability
to provide services and share files using
peer-to-peer applications will be limited.
Some benefits of the firewall are:
· Security issues will be less common. The
firewall will prevent a hacker on the Internet
from having direct access to the residence hall
computers that are protected by the firewall,
thus minimizing compromised computers.
· The firewall will help UND meet the
requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act (DMCA), by not allowing outside connections
visibility of content on the protected segments
of the network.
· Bandwidth usage outbound from the protected
residence hall networks will be lessened because
incoming requests for files will not be
serviced. This will increase available bandwidth
for other use.
The firewall is scheduled for deployment between
5:00AM and 7:00 AM on Tuesday, November 19th.
Noticeable impact of network use in the
residence halls should be minimal unless
services are being offered to the Internet from
these systems. Prior to the implementation date,
ITSS Network Services will continue managing
bandwidth to help in avoiding loss of networking
services in the residence halls.
For future developments concerning bandwidth,
firewall measures and other computing issues,
please refer to the ResNet web site at

Please contact the ITSS helpdesk at 777-2222 if
you have any concerns or questions.
